The song is made up of three movements or sections, a beginning middle and end if you will. The central section of the song was originally only loop pedal phrases. Initial writing and tracking was based around how to get to that section, and then how to get out of it.

REM's 'The Great Beyond' was a fairly loose source of inspiration for the first half. The song title was never changed from the draft title. The lyrics were written on a London bus a few weeks following the Las Vegas shooting of 2017.
